Case Study : Planning for regional communities

Community strategic planning

The Place

Place Match worked with a number of regional shires across Western Australia to deliver strategic community plans, as a part of the integrated planning and reporting framework. Working in conjunction with UHY Haines Norton, Place Match led the place visioning and community engagement strategies for the Shires of Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Exmouth, Morawa, Mingenew, Three Springs, Bridgetown, Donnybrook, Harvey and Halls Creek with a focus on long-term economic environmental, social and civic leadership strategies.

Our role

Place Match was responsible for leading stakeholder engagement, facilitation and preparing the strategic plan, based on community findings. This included:

  • Design and implement community engagement strategies to reach 10% local population
  • Facilitate strategic planning workshops for Councillors and Staff
  • Draft Strategic Community Plans for Council approval.

Outcomes

Place Match implemented a range of innovative and engaging stakeholder engagement techniques to involve the local communities, each tailored to the local audience.  Some of the most notable events included ‘swimming with the whale sharks in Exmouth’, ‘growing the orange tree in Harvey’, and ‘catching mud-crabs in Australind’.  The Strategic Plans have all been adopted by the respective local shires.

Deliverables:
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Community visioning
