Student Engagement and Public Art Delivery
The Baldivis Shopping Centre, in the heart of the growing area of Baldivis has become a social hub for the local community, complementing the new neighbouring Mary Davies Library and Community Centre, and providing residents and workers with new shopping, dining and entertainment experiences.
Following the success of the Centre’s first public art project #wallsandmalls, Stockland commissioned Place Match to deliver a second art piece but this time involving collaboration and engagement with local school students. This involved a creative competition amongst the schools with the final mural design to be delivered by acclaimed artist Paul Deej. The mural was installed to coincide with the opening of the $116 million metamorphosis of Stockland Baldivis Shopping Centre in May 2015.
Place Match’s role encompassed working with Stockland, local schools and the artist to deliver community engagement, the design competition and mural installation. This comprised:
The mural itself has brightened and activated the Baldivis Shopping Centre and supported ongoing place making and visitor attraction strategies. In addition, strong relationships have been formed between Stockland, local schools and the community in general, due to the direct involvement that students had in the mural design.
